When you meet someone new, maybe you know if you want romance or friendship, but if you don’t, how will you know? If you don’t know before you enter into the relationship, you probably won’t know afterwards, either—at least not right away. That isn’t a bad thing, however; you need to develop a friendship before you develop a romance in order to get to know the person you are dating. In most cases, going straight from not know them to dating them romantically prevents the natural flow of friendship development that is important to insure that the relationship gets off to the right start.

Sometimes it’s a difficult move to make, especially if you have been alone, and you want someone in your life, but the transition from single to romantic involvement is not always the right choice to make. It’s more important to get to know someone and be sure that person is the kind of person you want to date before you develop a full-blown romance that later goes belly up. The worst that will happen is you will have the company of another male or female friend if the meeting doesn’t develop beyond the friendship stage. It’s important to remember some people make better friends than lovers, and if the vibes aren’t there for romance, go with the friendship.

The reality is that you don’t have to choose one or the other. Meet different people, get to know them, and let nature take its course and lead you in the right direction if and when the time comes. Not everyone is dating material, so it isn’t necessary to look at it that way. You can even take your male or female friend and go places without having to be committed. Many people have had the problem of dealing with a jealous ex, whether it’s a spouse or boyfriend or girlfriend. It’s more difficult when you have moved forward into another relationship and your ex hasn’t. What do you do if he shows up at your home while you’re there with your new love interest? It’s easy enough to tell him or her to go, but what if they refuse? It’s a very sensitive situation because you know this could cause your new relationship to do a belly flop. As sad as it may be, the easiest way is to tell him or her that you have company and to please leave. If your request isn’t followed, you may have no alternative but to call the police to have him or her removed. The problem is some people cannot accept when a relationship ends, and they will do whatever they need to do in order to trying to revive what is gone. You have to be strong enough to now allow that to stand in the way of a new partner even if it means ignoring tears.

Once a relationship ends, you are no longer committed to any parts of that relationship unless there are children involved. In that case, you are committed only to paying child support (if you’re a father) and visitation. For a woman who has children from a previous marriage or relationship, your only commitment is to make sure the child(ren) have regular contact with their father and that he fulfills his financial obligation. Beyond that of children, you have no obligation to a previous marriage or relationship. Does that mean you should have no contact with his or her family even if you were close when you were together? That is something you will need to work out with the family members involved, but you may want to wait until you are sure that your ex accepts that the relationship is finished.

Do you believe that everyone has a soulmate? Many people believe that, while others aren’t quite convinced there is someone who knows you so well that when you meet them, you just know this is the person you want to be with forever. They know you like a book, and when you meet this person you feel as if you have know him or her for many years. The truth is, most people you know probably have a soulmate. It may be the person with whom they are currently involved, someone in their past, or someone in their future. Whatever the case may be, there is someone out there for each of us who knows us so well. That doesn’t always mean we will meet or marry our soulmate, but we do have one.

When you meet someone, is there a way to know if that is your soulmate? There are no hard and fast rules, you just know. It’s the feeling you get that says you feel as if you have known this person for all your life even if you just met. You feel comfortable when you are together and don’t feel the need for conversation because you already know what they are going to say. It may be someone you used to date that walked out of your life—when the time is right, that person will come back, and rather than starting over, you will pick up where you left off.

A soulmate is someone who will be there for you through thick and thin and never leaves your side. You may part ways for a time, but in the end, you will be together, whether it is on earth or in another place. Your soulmate may be sitting next to you in the room right now, and it may be someone you have never met. Either way, be certain there is a soulmate for you.

For some people, if they are not part of a couple, they are not happy, while others are content to live life as singles. Which should you choose? That has to be a decision you make, and you must make it based upon what is right for you, and what makes you happen. Date different people, go to dances, meeting new people for just friendship, and do things on your own that you didn’t have a chance to do when you were part of a couple. It’s never a good idea to start a new relationship as soon as you one, especially if the relationship was intense. Even if it wasn’t that intense, give yourself some space before you choose another couples relationship. It’s certainly easy enough to think you need that “security,” but the truth is that many relationship fail for that reason alone. People become co-dependent, and they cannot exist outside of the scope of the relationship, and the other person feels smothered.

Even if you are single because you don’t have a steady partner, don’t be overly concerned with changing that. What many people fail to realize is that when it’s time for them to be part of a couple, it will happen. You don’t want to force it, or seek someone out just to be part of a couple. Friends of the opposite gender are just as nice to have, and you never know—that may be the person with whom your destiny lies when the time is right.

One problem many people have when they look for a date or potential marriage partner is they are looking for someone like their mom or dad, even if that person was not the best parent in the world. It is not always a conscious decision; it just seems to happen, especially children who come from abusive families. It’s important to review the list you have made of qualities and expectations and make sure that you are not “pricing” yourself out of a match based on expectations that are too high.
